From Matthew Wordell, Holy Word, Austin, TX Dear Redeemed Child of God, I read a newspaper article today about Donald Trump. It seems he is being sued because some of the people who attended his “Trump University” were not satisfied with the results they got compared with what they were promised. Mr. Trump, not surprisingly, says that the lawsuit is without any merit; the people got exactly what they were told they would get. I don’t know which side deserves to win, and, frankly, I’m not all that concerned about who wins. The reason I bring it up is because I think it tells us something fundamental about 21st century America, and, really, about human nature. People love money, and will do lots of things to get it. It infects people the world over. Just take a look around you or talk to someone who has been in a different country, and you will find that Americans are not unique. In truth the reason behind that continual search for money is not about the money; the search is about the influence and prestige the money brings with it. Even in America it sometimes seems as though people with enough money can buy there way into or out of anything. Sadly, though, the disease even infects the church sometimes. There is a sin called simony that is an attempt to buy an office in the church. American religious life often seems to revolve around how much money the church is bringing in. It can be hard to avoid, but it is something the Bible warns us about the danger we face when we focus on money. The Bible, in fact, goes so far as to tell believers to purposely avoid the influence that money can buy. While it is not a sin to have money, after all God is the one who has blessed us, it is a sin to lose sight of why God has given us the money and to trust in the money instead of the God who gifted it to us. Our readings this week remind us of this simple but profound truth. The money God gives us can do many things, but it should not be about what it can do for us. The money we are given is given to us so that we can do things to spread God’s word farther. God does not care if you are rich or poor; God cares about how rich or poor you are in your faith in him. Old Testament Reading: Proverbs 25:6-7 Epistle Reading: James 2:1-13 Sermon Text: Luke 14:1,7-14 As you meditate on God’s word for us this week take some time to consider how God has blessed you and how you can use those blessings to spread the word.
