From Weather HQs Streaming Partner and Owner of stormscapelive.tv, Michael Phelps: In a word, in terms of weather, the month of February will be BUSY! Forecast models are depicting as many as eight storm systems across the U.S. through just the first half of the month, mostly impacting the eastern half of the nation, but the parched western U.S. will get in on a couple of those as well. The posted snowfall prediction map, in my opinion, has a decent grasp on the area of expected wintry precipitation through the first half of the month, although it is likely way off on the totals it is depicting. What we will see in general is the northern half of the U.S. continuing to experience cold and regular winter storm threats, while the southern half of the nation is generally milder and wet with even the chance for a few thunderstorm threats. The extensive snow pack that will be deposited across areas along and north of 40 degrees latitude will eventually aid in allowing arctic air to again push deep into the South. This, along with an ever southward progressing storm track with the passage of each major storm system, will potentially lead to one final significant winter storm threat for the South toward the middle or end of the month. Coming off the winter storm fiasco of Tuesday/Wednesday here in the South, there is a lot of buzz about another winter storm in about a week to 10 days. I would say at this juncture that is more likely to be a cold rain event for most of us, with ice potential in North Carolina. The greater potential winter storm threat for Dixie looms beyond that system. One other thing to note about Februarys weather is the potential for a delayed severe weather season. This would be due to the Gulf of Mexico seeing several significant arctic air intrusions this winter. The air mass over the Gulf is modified and will take some time to recover, so even when the Gulf is open, the air flowing north to fuel widespread and intense severe weather outbreaks will lack quality for a while. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, not only for the severe weather season in the South now commencing, but also the early portions of the Plains severe weather season in March and April.
