More Expand Replies (3) Reply [The Voice of Reason] The Voice of Reason 1 hour ago 1 19 So much tradition and specialness of our country has withered and died in the ditch. I breaks my heart to see how our country has changed over the last 2 decades. So much of the luster and the hope of prosperity in our country has faded. The days of graduating college and building your career into something to be proud of has been replaced with unemployment lines and foreclosures, and whole malls being razed so another giant greedy box store can come in and decimate the neighborhood more. Where are our dreams of tomorrow going to come from? Who looks forward to being hungry, unemployed and homeless? These do not make our country seem great and what is our Government actually doing to fix this, nothing absolutely nothing. The Government has overstepped its bounds and no longer is for the people, its only for big money and how much each player can take home at the end of the day. How are we to have holiday spirit when our countrys sugar plums have shriveled up and the only thing dancing in our heads is how are we going to make ends meet? I wont Humbug, and Ill still say Happy Holidays, However with a heavy heart and tilted head, for we know not what lies before us, but it shall soon be known. Are the people there that uncaring about this tradition? More Expand Replies (8) Reply [Shawn] Shawn 15 hours ago 3 222 Unfortunately due to current NYC regulations, volunteers cannot even give food away unless they are in a licensed kitchen that has been inspected by the NYC Health Dept! More Expand Replies (21) Reply [Snowmamm] Snowmamm 6 hours ago 4 126 How sad and too bad that a few dry cleaning companies couldnt offer their services to clean the Santa suits for free. I choose to give my money to the Salvation Army during the Christmas season. My Small Group at church also adopts a family each year for Christmas and we also help with food baskets for Thanksgiving. With the economy the way it is, the needs are great but if each and every one of us can help out just one family or one person, thats a good thing. Ive seen this Santa parade in person and Ill lay wages they would have 1,000 volunteers waiting to show up for this event every year w/ their own, or rented suit. More Expand Replies (2) Reply [Alex O] Alex O 10 hours ago 3 77 This is sad. Even though it never raised much money, it still raised enough to get 1,200 families grocery vouchers last year. I wish that the march would continue just so there would be more donations, but with the volunteers only wearing Santa hats as most the volunteers likely have Santa hats or could borrow one which would get rid of the storing, cleaning and transporting fees. This would also lead to more donations for the Hope & Heart campaign as they would get whatever is collected on Black Friday plus whatever is collected at the collection bin at the hotel instead of just whatever is collected at the hotel collection bin. I dont care too much about the tradition but I care about more families being fed. More Expand Replies (8) Reply [DEFAULT_USERNAME] Commenter 6 hours ago 5 118 Oh come on...you keep this going for a hundred years and suddenly it becomes too expensive? This is the kind of thing that raises awareness as much as it raises money. Surely, since it is so difficult to donate food, someone would store the costumes for them...also, if there are good people in the city, and I assume there are, you could find enough people, who would clean their own suits as part of their charity effort. Just raise some money and give it in the form of a check to a food kitchen in the city...hell, if I knew there was no one willing to store them for free, I would store them for the charity, an I am in Boston. They still have the option of doing their other charitable efforts. Of course it didnt make much money. Anyone stingy enough to camp out for a retail sale is way too cheap to donate money to charity. More Expand Replies (1) Reply [thomas] thomas 4 hours ago 3 26 Really? It costs that much money to store, clean and deliver 50 Santa outfits? How about you have the volunteers pick them up? Are you telling me the Salvation army doesnt have a store room where they can keep the outfits for a year? Hell, have an employee take them home and stick them in the attic. I really see only one cost, the cleaning. Maybe they could talk local dry cleaners into donating their time to clean them for the cause.
