From rags to riches... Ever wondered what happens to old Mileposts? If theyre lucky, they go to Carol Willett who turns them into all sorts of crazy paper machier sculptures like the infamous Captain Sands. See him and many more impressive creatures for yourself all this August at Dare Co. Arts Council. Read on for deets on Aug. 1s opening reception. Dare County Arts Council is pleased to host the work of artist Carol Willett in a special exhibit for the month of August. The show will feature a collection of her fanciful sculptures, and will open to the public on Friday, August 1st. Join us for the opening reception from 6pm - 8pm, as part of the First Friday festivities in downtown Manteo. The reception will feature live music, light fare, and libations, plus visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artist. In addition to the opening reception, there will be an Art Talk on Tuesday, August 12th from 6pm – 8pm, where Carol will share her thoughts and inspirations. Both events are free and open to the public. Carol Willett is a North Carolina Outer Banks artist who sculpts Creatures of Imagination. Using traditional papier and cloth mâché in novel ways, she tugs on the boundaries of the possible to sculpt creatures that overflow with joy, humor and a raft of other emotions seldom seen in Nature. Creatures evolve from recycled mail order catalogs, newspapers, bed sheets, wire coat hangers, seashells, seaweed and beads into schools of charming fish (some musical), flotillas of balletic jellyfish, flights of dramatic dragons, slithers of snakes and sea serpents, happy hydras and communities of crabs as well as the occasional sea god, mermaid, armadillo and pirate. Each is specifically and intentionally designed to provoke smiles. Willett is inspired by the ocean, literature and a life-long interest in cross cultural mythology. About her artwork, Carol says: Every artist has a mission - mine is to amuse through papier and cloth mâché and to increase the number of smiles in the world. A lifelong fascination with dragons and sea creatures led me to begin sculpting in 2011 - transforming newspaper, cardboard, coat hangers, plastic containers, old sheets, and found objects into Creatures of Imagination. Creatures pick up where Nature and evolution leave off - crossing species, making visual puns and they embody a wacky sense of humor. They have vivid imaginations, a penchant for role playing and are fond of costumes. Sales from this show benefit the arts community and the Roanoke Island Sea Turtle hospital.
