From the article: “The risk to loss of life needed to be reduced to acceptable thresholds so we only considered options that did that,” Andy Esarte, manager of engineering for the Town of Canmore, told residents at a recent open house. “Second, we looked at whether there was an option to buy out property and just remove the high-risk properties.” Through the assessment, they found 181 properties in the so-called red zone — homes that could see significant damage if another, larger flood occurred. Esarte said it would cost at least $90 million to buy out those properties. As a result, he said they looked at three options for flood retention structures that would mitigate the risk for less money than buying out those residents. #abwater #abflood #canmore #dam
