From the desk of Chief Anderson: The following article was just published by the R&L. This is a message that I need help in spreading! Thanks, Chief Anderson The holiday season will be quickly approaching and I wanted to take this opportunity to put out a few reminders concerning personal crime prevention. A re-occurring problem that we deal with is the habit of leaving purses, wallets, and other valuables within vehicles parked in shopping centers and residences. There are not only other motivated shoppers out there but also motivated offenders. We all know too well that there are people who view our unprotected vehicles and valuables as opportunity, and one that can have significant consequences. A broken car window is only the beginning of a series of headaches that will follow if a purse or wallet is stolen. Identity theft can lead to financial hardships and challenges that, in this case, are completely avoidable. Several years ago, I personally conducted a study of one of our largest parking areas. We surveyed hundreds of vehicles with astonishing results. During this survey we were able to easily view more than fifty vehicles with purses and handbags in plain sight. This is problematic in every city across the country and easily remedied. This is a message that I have made known numerous times and requires repeating. If we provide the opportunity for motivated offenders, they will take advantage of it and the crime reports prove it. Do yourself a big favor and do not willingly become a victim by leaving valuables in cars. Our agency works in cooperative efforts with other Iredell law enforcement agencies such as the sheriff’s office and N.C. Highway Patrol in keeping our streets and communities safe. Law enforcement efforts are increased tenfold when the public takes accountability in working with law enforcement and taking crime prevention seriously. Lets continue to work together to make Statesville a safe place to live, work, and recreate.
