Funk Eventing would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and thank some of the people who help keep me and my horses in top shape! Black Horse Clothing who very generously keep my kitted out in the best riding apparel, and Gillian Wooldridge owner of the gorgeous stallion Shibui All Black. I cant wait to get him out competing this year. My fantabulous farriers Malcolm Marks and Luke Fairburn. Shane Williams from Equine Accupuncture, Richelle Thompson who massages the horses and myself, and Verity from Gisborne Chiropractic who keeps me from falling apart! Kim Weston from Devoucoux who fits my saddles, and fitted me to the best saddles Ive ever ridden in. Deb Court who organises the lessons with Clemens Dierks who has helped me immensely. Last but not least, my amazing husband Charles who supports me and my many four legged Chestnutters! I have decided that my New Years resolution will be to enjoy my horses and appreciate them as the beautiful individuals that they are, not be in a hurry and enjoy the journey. This post is inspired by the Miley Cyrus song the climb. It really resonated with me at this current stage in my riding. Theres always gonna be another mountain- whether its the next level of competition, a new movement to master or a new direction, there will always be another hurdle to negotiate! Many years ago I remember feeling overwhelmed and frustrated by this phenomenon, and to some extent I still do, but now I (try to) see it as a blessing. I will always be able to grow and learn as a rider and horse person. Unlike sports like gymnastics or netball that have an end date, with training, riding is like a good wine, you get better with age! Its not about how fast you get there, its the climb- How often are we in a hurry! I honestly thought I would have had a string of three star horses by now and competed overseas! Alas, life has conspired against me and part of me wants to scream with frustration, but another part of me knows that I wouldnt be where I am, with the perspective I have if I hadnt had these experiences. Maree Tomkinson summed it up brilliantly after her amazing ride on Diamantina at WEG - The test only goes for a few minutes, its the journey thats important! It aint about whats waiting on the other side- The end goal we start out with wont always be the one we end up getting to. I always say dream big! Its a scary thing to do, because it makes you vulnerable. When you say I want to get here, and you dont make it, it opens you up to criticism from others and yourself. Nobody likes to fail. However, if you dont have something to aim for, you will always fall short. Better to try and fail, than not try at all. Dont listen to the little people who thrive on seeing people fall short, surround yourself with positive people who bring out the best version of you. On the flip side of the coin, becoming too goal orientated can become a slippery slope. Deadlines and horses dont mix. Do you really want to get there at any cost? Your horses emotional wellbeing and correct training should be your priority. A stressed, pressured horse is never pretty. We want our horses to be beautiful harmonious, expressive dancers in whatever discipline you choose. Next time your out with your horse, just enjoy the moment. Your beautiful horse allows you a freedom of body and mind. That is riding.
