GIFFNOCK REDS - match report Matchday 4 GIffnock SC 2-1 GIffnock Reds After a great effort against Parkvilla, it was back to Norwood on a fine summer’s evening for the eagerly awaited Giffnock derby. In truth the match started just before 1pm with some light-hearted playground banter and five or six fingers being waved in the faces of a few Reds’ players (“and that’s just the half-time score….”). So by the time of the real kick-off, the white-shirted Reds were ready. The first 10 minutes were frenetic and played mainly in the Reds half, but there was little composure on either side and any efforts restricted to long range. Sam & Harry picked up where they left off on Saturday, Sam making a timely interception from Matthew T and then Harry saving well with his legs from close range. The Reds gradually built their way into the game and good interplay between Con and Louis set up Adam but his shot was well saved by Daniel. Mattie then teed up Jack but he had to hurry his shot and it slid past. Some good Giffnock pressing down the left saw a cross from Joe come off Scott D’s head but Harry was alert to make a good reflex save. Whilst Giffnock had more territory, ball possession was evenly split and the tackles on both sides were hard but fair. But ten minutes from the break, the referee awarded Giffnock the softest of free kicks for an innocuous coming together just wide of the box. As the kick came over, Matthew C was allowed a free header to put Giffnock one up. If that was preventable, a second goal shortly after was of the slapstick variety as a hopeful punt into the Reds’ box caused confusion in defence and the ball eventually dropped to Jay who converted an easy chance. There had been little between the teams so the sudden 2 goal deficit was harsh but the Reds rallied and finished the half strongly, twice causing havoc in the Giffnock defence, an excellent Ross Clarke free kick almost leading to a goal. HT 2-0 The second half started evenly, with neither team getting on top. Harry made a long range save but Louis, Scott D, Sam & Ross stood strong at the back. Slowly the Reds were starting to cause problems for Giffnock, with a 4-man midfield of Scott McL, Jack, Mattie & Con pushing forward. Ten minutes in, Jack dribbled past 3 players and just when he looked like being crowded out played a perfect pass through to Scott F who took his time before lifting the ball beyond Daniel from 20 yards for a cool finish to make it 2-1. The Reds were lifted and took the fight to Giffnock again, whose response was a series of substitutions in an attempt to break up play. Giffnock were hitting mainly on the counter-attack now and Harry dived at the feet of Matthew C to prevent a third goal. The match continued in the main as a midfield battle right through to the closing stages; chances were rare, though Scott F went close to grabbing what would have been a deserved equaliser with 5 minutes to play. The subsequent ice-bucket challenge must have come as something of a relief then to the Giffnock coaches after an anxious last half hour. Final Score 2 - 1 Reds man of the match: Jack
