GRAY WHALE CENSUS UPDATE, Pt. Vicente: 11 January 2015. 16 southbound! One GRAY WHALE came close enough to shore to hear its blows; it BREACHED twice, lifted its head many times, and produced a bubble blast. A very small juvenile swam through the kelp, surfacing with kelp on its head. Two sightings rolled around a lot near the R10 buoy. The first sighting spent an hour in the area; one whale BREACHED and SPYHOPPED. MATING! the second sighting displayed pectoral fins; head lifts, one male displayed a Pink Floyd, proving that this was indeed mating behavior. (Most gray whale conceptions occur during their southbound migration). A few COMMON DOLPHIN interacting with them. This sighting occurred after sunset; we stayed late to watch them, which was challenging after darkness fell. We tracked a pair of FIN WHALES; one was much smaller than the other, so this was most likely a cow/calf pair. We also spotted COMMON DOLPHIN, BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN, and PACIFIC WHITE-SIDED DOLPHIN. -Alisa Southbound grays -----16 Northbound grays------- 0 Total grays ------------- 16 Cow/calves South------- 0 Total grays (since 1 Dec): *700 southbound, 3 northbound
