Garden Tip: I was asked here earlier this morning how long sprinklers should be run to water sufficiently under twice-a-week restrictions. Youll see the very same answer to Jessica Harans question below. Here is what I told her, and I think it bears posting as something for every gardener to read. We must conserve all available water! My reply: Honestly, if I could sign an agreement with the rain makers that I would water two times a week maximum ever, I would do that. Unfortunately, were about to be cut back to once a week or once every two weeks in many parts of North Texas. Were already there in Collin County, since the cities growth has far outpaced the water reserves set aside for that area many decades ago. You can make it very easily with twice-a-week watering. However, every one of your stations (zones) will probably end up with a different time, because they all will vary. You really ought to invest in a smart (ET) controller now, before the summer. Its a small computer that the irrigation contractor sets to take into account such things as when youre allowed to water, water pressure, types of soil in various zones, types of plants in various zones, types of heads in various zones, slopes, sun or shade, etc. It balances all of that against temperature readings, recent rainfall and wind to determine when each station will run and for how long. ALL OF THAT for just a few hundreds of dollars. Smart controllers usually pay for themselves within the first summer or two. Mine cut my water use in half. Short answer to your question: there is no one good answer that will cover all the plants that youre trying to grow. Just as theres no one good answer were you to ask me, Neil, how much should I drink, and how often should I drink it? Hope that helps.
