George Flinn’s latest quest for elected office will be a pursuit for the General Assembly. The local radiologist and businessman was nominated Thursday night by the Shelby County Republican Party’s steering committee to be the GOP nominee in the Nov. 4 special election for the vacant state Senate District 30 seat. The Senate vacancy was created by the Aug. 29 resignation of veteran Sen. Jim Kyle, D-Memphis, after his election as a Shelby County Chancery Court judge. The local Democrats will meet Monday, where they’ll consider four candidates, chairman Bryan Carson said. They include former Rep. Carol Chumney, retired educator Cynthia Gentry, former Tennessee Regulatory Authority director Sara Kyle and former state Sen. Beverly Marrero. State Rep. Antonio Parkinson announced Thursday he won’t seek the Democratic nomination.
