Get Reel The fishing this week has not been anything spectacular but hopefully the prawn this weekend will turn things on. Game fishing Things are very quiet on the game front so far with most boats heading out posting zeros. All of the dpi Fads are still out for maintenance. Keep an eye on this site dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/recreational/saltwater/fads/map. Lake Macquarie The next prawn run in the Lake should be timed perfectly for next weekend with Friday, Saturday and Sunday night looking good for pawning. We just need a bit of rain to stir things up. The run will also improve the fishing in the channel and fish like bream, whiting and flathead will be all out take advantage of the run. The best option would be small prawn imititation soft plastics or lightly weighted prawn baits. There is some big flathead in the lake at the moment the average size is 60-80cm. Try a 5 inch soft plastic fished in 3-7 meters of water. A few people are catching Jewfish using the same method on the run out tide. Outside there is some nice flathead on the gravel, try a paternoster with a plastic on one hook and bait on the other. Still plenty of salmon around Moon Island and a few bonito are hanging in closer to the island. Newcastle There is some nice school Jewfish hanging around Stockton beach, the average size is about 6kg. They are loving the beach worms, this gives you a good chance of a getting few sand whiting as well. On the breakwall some nice tailor are taking ganged pilchards on a float or lightly weighted, most fish are being caught around sunrise and sunset. There is also still plenty of tailor around 40cm being caught on the inshore reefs but the mutton birds are still out in there millions and are making it unfishable at times. There is not many Jew being caught in the harbour yet mainly just soapies but an 8kg schoolie was pulled from near the pilot station on a live yakka through the week. Port Stephens Luderick are being caught off the co-op breakwall and also some nice bream on lightly weighted baits, burley heavy and fish light. Rodney Grills and Paul Kennedy fished inshore this week and reported some squire at little island and said the shovelnose sharks were a real pain. An extra congratulations to my brother Rodney who caught the first Marlin of the season at Lizard Island, it was a black estimated at 300lb.
