Getting to know your workshop presenters Talking with Chad Atkinson, EMMY Award winning Special Effects Artist. Q. Why have you decided to become involved with Real Film Festival and what is your role? A. I have become involved with the Real Film Festival to talk about what goes into creating a prosthetic, the cost and time involved. During the workshop, Ill demonstrate the application of a silicone prosthetic appliance. Ill talk about my work experience from working in Hollywood to working on Australian films. Ill also talk about how film makers can get more for their small budgets. Q. What is the importance of this type of event for the regions film industry and what makes real films unique? A. I think the importance of this type of event is that it is opening up a dialogue of taking the Australian film industry seriously. Having a film festival in an area where it isnt known for film making will have a great impact on young artists and technicians looking to explore the creative industry. Having a networking model of industry professionals ,student competitions and screenings of a healthy variety topics makes Real stand out as a festival looking to move the film industry forward. Q. What was your favourite film you worked on and why? A. I get this question asked a lot about my favourite movie I worked on. I have the ones that I had fun working on and then the ones I am proud of and then there are ones that you just try to erase from your brain. My favourite would probably be Hostel part 2 from Eli Roth, why? Because I was on the brink of quitting the industry and I went with two great friends of mine and it rebooted my love for horror and cinema. It was a gory, bloody film shoot but us FX guys were applauded after some of our gags. Its what I always wanted to happen on a film set, recognition from the other departments of how affective we are to a film. Q. What’s his top pick of who to see at the Real Film Festival? A. So far my Top Pick would be the Johanna Hamilton Doco 1971. I love a little conspiracy and spy games stories. This looks gritty. Q. What are your views on the region as a film makers destination? A. It seems that Hollywood has its eyes on the region with name movies like X-Men Origins/ Superman Returns and the local surf film Newcastle. The area has a great advantage of having a European/Australian/ American look to it. Not only is the locations great but more importantly are the really great film crews in New South Wales. Chad will be teaching a workshop on Special Effects Makeup on Friday 7th November from 9.00am - 11.00pm at the Newcastle Film and Media School. Head to realfilmfestival.au/workshops
