Give papa some extra protein! An extra 20 grams of protein per day was linked to a 26 percent lower stroke risk...not conclusive, but reassuring. And more evidence that protein (specifically meaning a blend of 20 different amino acids), specifically, is not the problem with the Western Diet. Best flesh protein noted in this analysis was fish, not red meat. Will be reviewing the article as soon as our librarian can get it to me in hard copy (I still like to write sidebar notes n underline, etc...and yes, I recycle!). Vegetable protein wasnt detected to be as beneficial as fish, but I doubt it really makes as big of a difference where you get your quality protein as much as that it is limited in calories/fat (especially saturated fat), salt/sodium (or any preservatives related to cured meats) or cholesterol. The plant-based omnivores might say the benefits of fish include the vitamin D and omega-3 – while vegans may say the potential for pollutants and the (albeit lower amounts of) saturated fat and cholesterol outweigh any D or long chain omega-3 benefits. And both contentions have potential validity. And that, for better or worse, is where REALITY MEETS SCIENCE (tm) RMS
