Given the number of misguided posts and comments, I feel the need to explain what white privilege means. It does not mean we are all well-off. It does not mean our lives are a cake walk or that we do not struggle, or even that we think we are superior at an individual level. And the mention of it is most definitely not a reason to get defensive. It means that we have the convenience of ignoring issues of race simply because we dont have to see them—or worse: suffer from them—first hand. Now that some of these issues have been dropped right into our sight line, it is our responsibility to recognize them, not to wash our hands of them. There is a fight happening—or that NEEDS to be happening—right now, and to stand on the sidelines is not to be the bigger person; it is to actively ignore what is happening and CHOOSE to do and say nothing. It is to allow it to continue. It is to contribute to the cycle through apathy. That is the convenience our skin has awarded us. To have black friends is not enough. To claim them as our friends and brothers and sisters while leaving them to fight alone is to want only the parts of them that dont inconvenience us. Its time to speak up on their behalf. This is life and death, and we have to step forward, take responsibility, and ask, what can I do to help? To all the good, decent, honorable, upstanding, heroic officers out there: we need you. Join the people. Lock arms with your fellow officers to halt this thing from the inside. You are the gears, and together you can help to break the machine.
