Go to college, get a job, get married, have a kid, retire, die. Or live life on your own terms. For years, students have been asking me: how will I know when Im really a writer? And my answer is always the same: when that question no longer matters to you. Free your mind. Labels, identities, have everything to do with fear and money. Look at who confers those labels and youll discover whos making money. How many gold stars will it take before you become the real thing? Why does recognition / adoration matter so much? A very wise and gifted man once said: At the end of the game, the pawn and the king wind up in the same box. We can agree with that, but then why arent we happy? Could it be that the bourgeois values our parents drummed into our heads when we were kids were all about their need for respectability, the security of defined boundaries, and the egotistical relief that comes from denying ones own mortality? Maybe theres more to life than that--than a middle-class reward system and being a good productive citizen. Maybe the undeniable fact that we are all going to die, that in 50 short years, most if not all of the people reading this will be in an urn or in the ground is the doorway to personal freedom. If you have someone to love (or even like) you, enough money for basic necessities, access to information, fundamentally healthy habits, and a tolerable living arrangement, stop making yourself miserable. You have it all. This is heaven and youre already in it. Do you hate your life right now so much that you cant wait to retire and watch TV for the remaining 10-15 years because you never got that corner office and the walnut wastebasket? Do you think youre going to be rich / famous / adored someday if you only work harder and suck up the right way to the right people? Who told you these things and tried to make you believe them? Your days are numbered. Pay attention.
