Godly character begins with humility. Without humility, all other character traits become rooted in self-righteousness and pride. God Himself resists the proud. He wages war against the proud. In some fashion or another, God reduces those who glory in themselves to nothing. But God is gracious. I know I have been at the receiving end of extremely mild chastening for my own pride. When I begin to think more highly of myself, eventually, God knocks me down, albeit gently. Would that I would remember the soft chastening hand of the Lord when I am tempted to become proud! His hand may not remain so light.
