God’s Child Posted: The Upper Room Disciplines 2015 The Upper Room Disciplines 2015 is a devotional guide for Christians who want to delve deeper into scripture and apply it to their daily lives. Fifty-three writers from diverse Christian backgrounds share messages of hope, challenge, and joy. Each daily reading includes a focal scripture passage from the Revised Common Lectionary, a meditation related to the scripture, and a prayer or suggestion for reflection. Read John 13:1-13 The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. - Mark 10:45 (NRSV) Todays Devotional When our family moved to a new city, I had trouble finding employment. Eventually, I accepted a low-paying, part-time position cleaning the local library. What I hoped would be a temporary job has lasted over a year. The longer I worked in this job, the more I felt trapped and the more my self-esteem plummeted. I became embarrassed by the work I did and grew bitter and resentful. Then, while studying the Bible one morning, I read about Jesus washing the feet of his disciples — a task usually performed by the lowliest of servants. This illustration reminded me that Jesus set an example of servanthood for us to follow. I realized that my ego had been telling me that my job was beneath me, and I had been measuring my worth by the world’s standards, not God’s. As I pondered Jesus’ example, my focus began to shift. This job has taught me humility. Creating a clean and inviting atmosphere in the library is an important service. My pay has helped alleviate financial strain for my family, and the flexible, part-time hours allow me more time at home with my young son. Even if I don’t enjoy what I do, I can be proud of a job well done in service to others. I have value not because of what I do but because of who I am. I am a child of God. Julie Calleja (Michigan, USA) Thought for the Day: As children of God, we each have unlimited value. Prayer: Gracious God, help us to follow the example set by Jesus Christ to serve others joyfully. Amen. Prayer Focus: Those dissatisfied with their jobs
