Good Morning from KTJS NEWS Kiowa County Commissioners met Monday morning. Commissioner Tim Binghom reported crews are hauling a quantity of rock from a closing oil well operation. The rock has been donated by the company to the county. He also said work crews will be attending mine safety training later this week. The county road rock quarry operations are considered mines and the training is required by the Mine Safety Administration. Commissioner Tom Anderson said his crews are blading roads and hauling sand. A contractor is starting work now on the road project west of Mountain Park. Commissioner Stan Funkhouser aid crews are preparing for the demolition of the old Eugne Field School building in Hobart. Commissioners approved the annual city and county agreement with Gotebo . Commissioners approved Intergovernmental Agreement between Kiowa County Emergency Management and Town of Gotebo Fire Department for Gotebo Fire Department to purchase a 2002 Avalanche for $3,500. They approved declaring a list of vehicles and equipment as surplus to be sold at the March Circuit Engineering District auction in March. Commissioners acknowledged receive of a federal/state 50-50 planning grant of $20,000 for the Kiowa County office of Emergency Management. Voters in Kiowa County who want to have absentee ballots mailed to them for the February Annual School Election should apply now, County Election Board Secretary Morris said today. Although the County Election Board can accept applications for absentee ballots until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, Morris urged voters who want to vote by absentee ballot to apply early. Absentee ballot application forms are available at the County Election Board office located at 215 North Lincoln, Hobart. “At least two mail transactions must be made,”Morris said. “The County Election Board must mail the ballots to the voter and the voter must return the voted ballots by mail.” Ballots must be in the hands of the County Election Board by 7 p.m. on election day in order to be counted. The Oklahoma Arts Institute is currently accepting online applications and scheduling auditions for OSAI. Held June 13 – 28, OSAI is taught by nationally renowned artists and offers instruction in acting, chorus, creative writing, ballet, drawing & painting, film & video, modern dance, orchestra, and photography. Every accepted student automatically receives a full scholarship to the program, worth over $2,500. Auditions occur January through early March at locations across the state. To attend OSAI, applicants must be enrolled in an Oklahoma public school, private school, or home-school program and must be at least 15 years old by Sept. 1, 2015. Graduating seniors are eligible. The Hobart Friends of the Library are sponsoring a “Let’s Talk About It” program at Hobart Public Library. The next program is this Sunday February 1st at 2:00 pm in the Slaner Room of the library. The program is titled “Much Depends on Dinner”. The series of five novels describe what we eat can be a source of joy and delight, and of creative expression, as well as reason for anguish, worry, dread and even fear. This Sunday’s book,The Tummy Trilogy by Calvin Trillin, celebrates the everyday cooking of regions and ethnicities, and most especially, the people who keep these traditional foods alive. His writing is anything but cranky, however, and his stories of the people he meets and the foods he seeks out are witty and entertaining. The scholar for this novel is Dr. Jerry Nye of Southwestern University. Date of presentation is Sunday, February 1st, 2015 at 2:00 pm. The graduation ceremony for the Southwest Technology Center school of Nursing is this Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Frances Herron Seminar Centerin Altus. Upon completing the strenuous 12 month program, there are 16 candidates for graduation in the 2014-2015 class. An orientation led by Steve Prater, Western’s Director of Information Technology will be held Today, January 27 at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. in the LRC. The space offers in-house use of several high-tech tools and resources that highlight Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) technologies and entice the creator/tinkerer. The tools include, a quad copter, robot kit and several electronic components for exploration. The MakerBot 3-D printer is also available for use. Scrapbook creators can get crafty with Crikut and Cuttlebug. Dedicated computers in the LRC also offer exploration of 3-D interaction tools, Leap Motion Controller and Oculus Rift. The online learning database, Lynda enables pa¬trons to choose from thousands of software tutorials and other learning resources. The Kiowa County 4-H Speech Contest will be this Wednesday at 4:30 at the County Exhibit Building. Following the contest we will have a leadership training for all 4-hers. Donald R. “Buck” Boyd, 77, of Erick, originally from Carnegie died Saturday at his home. He had worked in pipeline construction and was a farmer, rancher and rodeo cowboy competing in calf roping, bull dogging, bronc and bull riding. He also built and raced stock cars. He is survived by his wife, Lavonne of the home and grandchildren. Frankie Lou Rambo, 61, of Blair died Sunday after a long illness. She was raised northwest of Warren and graduated from Blair High School. She had several jobs including working at Wal Mart and later as a delivery truck driver, then became an over the road truck driver. She is survived by a daughter Misty Rambo serving in the military in Japan and a step daughter Liz Rambo of Oklahoma city. Services for Frankie Lou Rambo will be 3pm Friday at Lowell Tims Funeral Chapel in Altus. The family will meet friends Thursday from 6 till 7pm at the Blair Community Center. Ruby Fern Johnson , 96, died January 18th in Nashville. She was born on July 21, 1918, in Carter, Ruby Fern graduated from Granite High School in 1936 She graduated from Southwestern State Teachers College in Weatherford, Oklahoma, with a degree in business, and taught school in Roosevelt and other locations. She was the wife of the late Dewey Johnson. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahomas newly elected Superintendent of Public Instruction is unveiling a new five-year plan to give Oklahoma teachers a $5,000 pay raise. Republican Joy Hofmeister says increased teacher pay is critically important in addressing a significant teacher shortage in Oklahoma. The plan would increase teacher pay by $5,000 and add five days of instruction to the school year over the next five years. A starting teacher in Oklahoma makes $31,600. The average salary is about $44,000. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The executive director of the Oklahoma Democratic Party has stepped down from the post hed held for more than three years. Party officials say Trav Robertson has taken a leave of absence to explore another opportunity. The partys Central Committee voted unanimously to promote David Scott of Ada to the position of interim executive director.
