Good morning! Heres Robins weekly message - Greetings, This weeks message focuses on Kristallnacht as tonight we commemorate 75 years after this horrific event. In searching for the words to help us remember the events which signified world-wide exposure to the treatment of the Jews, I share with you the following: Janet R. Kirchheimer shares these words: It was evening, and it was morning-two endless days that history records as Kristallnacht, the night of broken glass. Synagogues, Jewish-owned businesses, and homes were burned, looted, damaged, and destroyed in Nazi government-sponsored riots throughout Germany on November 9 and 10, 1938. Numbers vary greatly, but about 270 synagogues were burned, more than 7,000 shops, businesses, and homes were damaged or destroyed, and about 100 Jews were killed. Between 26,000 and 30,000 Jews were arrested and deported to concentration camps. My father was one of them. This poem also helps us not to forget: Broken glass, broken lives, Glass in shards, like crystal knives- On a night of broken glass. Broken hopes, broken dreams, The shards reflect our lives, it seems- On the night of broken glass. Broken homes, broken hearts, Parents, children; torn apart- On this night of broken glass. Broken buildings, broken souls, Broken synagogues and torah scrolls- On this night of broken glass. Broken pride, broken stand, We are shamed with our religious brand- On that night of broken glass. Broken city, broken town, Within disconsolation we drown- During that night of broken glass. Broken country, broken land, Ruined lives once so grand- From the night of Broken Glass. ~ Leeandra Guy As you welcome Shabbat this evening, may you take a few moments to remember our past and may you be blessed with a Sabbath of joy, rest and peace.
