Good morning! Welcome to September’s first Monday Morning Acu-Minute! Did you watch the video in last week’s “Minute?” This is a popular clip of a test done in the late 1990’s to assess attention. Viewers, given the instruction to watch the white ball, actually MISSED THE BIG BLACK GORILLA 46% of the time! Once they changed their focus, and watched the video again, it was plain as day, which revealed a very simple fact….we tend to miss what we are not looking for. How does this relate to happiness? In any situation, a multitude of things are going on, and our brains have to select something to bring into our awareness. This then becomes our reality. Arguably, people with a persistently negative frame of mind have a highly developed cognitive ability to sort for, and then see, lack of opportunity. A person, who has cultivated the knack to see possibilities, opportunities, and positive attributes, will be more likely to see those very things, and “…let in these messages that make us more adaptive, more creative, and more motivated - messages that allow us to spot and pounce on more opportunities at work and at play.” The Happiness Advantage, p. 100, by Shawn Achor. And, thanks to something called “neuroplasticity” that we spoke about earlier, we can, in fact, train ourselves to “see” the world differently. Ah, yes! There’s the gorilla!!
