Great blog. I had the privilege of helping to start and teach 9 years in a school where we did our best, within time constraints, to get our children moving. At Solace School in Syracuse, New York, we took Brain Gym breaks, used the big physio-balls for kids who were at the extreme end of the need to move continuum, some teachers did yoga with their classes, and we all tried to create loan banks for students who had insufficient winter wear for recess. At staff meetings, we discussed the Body-Brain Connection, and those who could afford it went to summer institutes on brain-compatible education (thanks, Susan Kovalik!) This was a public school, and teachers paid for some the physio balls and other recess equipment. For this and many other reasons, Solace boasted the 2nd-highest high school graduation rate of students who moved on from our school, and was named a national Blue Ribbon School. What happened? Three things: 1. They closed our school because it was so small and not cost-effective. 2. Core Curriculum. Kills time to move. 3. Increased poverty (and all the resultant difficulties, i.e. safe places to play) in our city.
