Greccio Provides Support For Residents Affected by Fire Just after 3:00 a.m. this morning, the Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the Santa Fe Apartments, located at 1228 Delaware Dr., just north of the Citadel Mall. One apartment was a complete loss, and created significant heat and smoke damage to surrounding apartments and the internal hallway. Two residents were transported to the hospital due to smoke inhalation, but were released shortly thereafter. Sadly, three pets were lost to the fire. A total of sixteen individuals and families have been displaced by the fire. Greccio has been working throughout the day to secure housing for each family. Ten families will be temporarily moved into other Greccio properties; three families are staying locally with other family members and three are receiving housing support from the Red Cross. Greccio’s unique model of integrated supportive services is an example of our mission in action. The trauma of the early-morning fire evolved into an atmosphere of support, options, and community. Counsel and comfort, regular communication, and food and shelter were available for each resident until they transitioned to their temporary housing and received other vital needs. Greccio wishes to express sincere gratitude to the Colorado Springs Fire Department for their quick and lifesaving action, the American Red Cross for their tireless effort to support resident needs, and the Humane Society for caring for the pets and pet owners who live at Santa Fe Apts. The Santa Fe Apartments were very recently acquired by Greccio, on Monday, May 12th. One of Greccio’s first actions was to replace batteries in all smoke detectors, and to install new fire extinguishers throughout the building. In spite of the trauma of the moment, the residents have expressed their gratitude for being so well taken care of, and responders commented throughout the day about Greccio’s unique level of support during and after a residential fire. Best wishes and offers of support were received throughout the day from the City of Colorado Springs, the El Paso County Housing Authority, and numerous nonprofits and Greccio supporters.
