Greece Solidarity Campaign on the abrupt closure of ERT Broadcasting THE CLOSURE OF ERT The Greece Solidarity Campaign was set up just over a year ago, to mobilise support for Greece from the British public, politicians, academics, journalists and unionists, in these trying times. One of our main aims is to help Greece and the Greek people to counteract the negative images that have been promoted within the rest of Europe in the context of the economic crisis. We have received with surprise and sadness the news about the abrupt closure of ERT. Whatever the arguments about the future of the country’s public service broadcaster and the need for reform, we are also very concerned about the way in which this action has been taken by the government. It would be unacceptable for any government today, in any European country, to interfere in this manner in the operations of country’s public broadcasting service, never mind close it down without any warning and without a full debate in its parliament. These are actions associated with dictatorships and totalitarian regimes in underdeveloped countries. We believe that the closure of ERT and above all the manner in which it has happened, is damaging the international image of the country as a whole and it is likely to generate a lot of negative publicity and ill feeling. We are genuinely concerned that this will be used by enemies of Greece as an indication that the country is incapable of governing itself as a modern democratic European nation. We call upon the government and its supporters to recognise the damage that this action is doing to the country and to abandon it, entering instead into proper negotiations about the future of ERT with the staff affected and a proper debate in the parliament,. We consider that the action taken by the employees of ERT, to fight against this dictatorial treatment by their own government, is fully justified and we express our solidarity and our support for their efforts to reverse it. We are also calling upon their colleagues in the British Media and the wider British Trade Union movement, to also express their solidarity and practical support. Cllr Isidoros Diakides Paul Mackney Co-chairs Greece Solidarity Campaign.
