Green Cleaning Tips While it is a little late for spring #cleaning, we can call still benefit from a good #house #cleaning. It can be even more beneficial, both to your health and to the #environment, if we use #green #cleaning techniques. Here are a few tips to get you started and a few more to keep you going. Tip 1 – Get rid of all your chemical #cleaners. You’d be amazed how much #cleaning you can get done with some hot water, some white vinegar, and a bit of elbow grease. Most of the #green #cleaning materials that are commonly used are already in your kitchen, so there’s no reason to hang on to all those nasty chemicals. Check with the waste disposal office in your city or town to find out the proper way to dispose of all your unused #cleaning materials. Tip 2 – Go green, literally! Green plants are nature’s air filter, and will work better than any manufactured filter that money can buy. A good rule of thumb is that you will need approximately one medium sized (6-8 inch) plant per 100 sq ft of your home’s area. If that seems like a lot, try just putting a few in areas where you spend most of your time and it won’t be long before you notice a difference. Tip 3 – Ditch the Disposable Brands like #Swiffer and other similar devices can be great to make your #cleaning easier, but the disposable sweeping pads are extremely wasteful. If you need something that can be used wet or dry, invest in some #microfiber towels. These can be cut to any size you need and once used, can be run through a #laundry cycle and used over and over again. Speaking of laundry… Tip 4 – Skip the Dry Cycle Weather permitting, hang your #laundry outside as much as possible. This is a great way to reduce your overall household energy usage. In wet weather, cooler months, or during allergy season, set up an indoor hanging area that takes advantage of the cool/warm dry air you already have within your home. Tip 5 – Get #eco #friendly #detergent There are plenty of recipes to help you make your own #eco-#friendly #laundry detergent (usually made of a mixture of washing soda, borax and bar soap), but if you’d prefer to pick something up off the shelf, make sure you check the ingredients and do your research first. Tip 6 – Skip the Dryer Sheets Not only are these designed to be thrown away, creating waste, they’re full of all sorts of chemicals. If you need something to remove static, try tossing a tightly wrapped ball of aluminum foil in with your wet clothes. If you’re missing the scent that the dryer sheets provide, add a sachet of dried lavender or other similar herbs for a subtle, natural scent. Hopefully, this can help get you on the easy path to a #greener #clean. Not only will you be creating a healthier environment for yourself and your family, you will be making great strides toward preserving the planet for future generations.
