Group: TPM / Techpost Media Subject: The new Raj – India’s domination of the cloud… The speed with which the world is becoming ever smaller and interconnected continues to astound me. Lately, I have been noticing the sheer volumes of Indian IT professionals and engineers participating in on-line cloud computing communities. In the largest “Cloud Computing” group on LinkedIn (with over 230,000 members), 42,000 people are from India. Over 12,000 members of the Cloud Computing group are from Bengaluru alone. That compares to 100,842 members from the US and 10,000 members from New York city. San Francisco beat Bengaluru with 17,000 members, but not by much. There are only 17,000 members from the UK. In my own company (which offers a cloud computing hosting service) over half of our users are from India. Most of the user blogs about using my company’s services are from Indians. To be fair, I notice that most of my company’s users are from emerging markets in general (something like 70% of them). My company has a lot of Eastern European, South American and even African users. What does all this mean? Has India become the hot place to be for cloud computing? Are cloud computing services more popular in emerging markets because their own native hosting infrastructure is so poor that they gravitate to third party offerings? Maybe Indians are just more interested in technology (relatively speaking) than anyone else. One conclusion I have drawn from the national demographics I have seen in cloud computing is that any tech company which neglects to make an effort to market to India is missing out on the most dynamic, and expanding, market there is. As the marketing guy of a small cloud firm I have decided to put a greater effort into setting up events and activities in India than anywhere else. The numbers of target people I can reach in dense centers like Bengaluru and Hyderabad are phenomenal. Another plus is that since few other companies put much effort into marketing to Indian IT professionals, it is easier to get noticed there. Better still, Indians just don’t seem to have become as jaded to trying new things as Americans. Cheers, Michael Surkan TPM Chief Evangelist
