Guilt Is A Heavy Load To Carry… “ Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.” Matthew 27:3-5 KJV THOUGHT: Judas repented. He even took the money BACK to the chief priests and threw it down and walked out. But even though he had repented, his guilt was so incredibly heavy, he went out and hung himself. For a time Judas was counted as one of the 12. In fact, he was their treasurer, the keeper of the money. He was a trusted individual who stayed by Jesus side until… until he ALLOWED (there’s that word again) ALLOWED satan to take hold of his mind, heart and very soul. What must have gone through his mind from the time he repented, was sneered at by the chief priests and elders and left the temple? Intense, unbearable guilt? As I was preparing the last of this week’s BREAD, I really had to stop and think about it a long time. All I could think of was - Lord he REPENTED. He even gave the money back. Why could he not shake the horrible guilt and find peace? My mind plays out a scenario of a child who gets caught with their hand in the cookie jar and cries and cries, oh how SORRY they are. Was Judas just sorry…sorry for himself? How deep was his repentance? I have known people who have done a wrong to someone and they go to an altar and repent and think they are just fine. But there is still a nagging guilt in their heart and mind because they have not gone to the person they wronged and ask THEM to forgive them. Once they do that, the greatest burden in the world will be lifted from their shoulders. God help us to find peace and not carry a heavy load of guilt with us throughout our lifetime. J EXTRA THOUGHT: Just a last thought to leave with you this week… when you see that ad where the lady’s handbag becomes a super-sized bag, weighing her down, take a flashlight and dig deep into your heart closet and see if you have a huge bag stored back there. I am going to. J Have a blessed weekend and make sure you put God in it. J Carol Durfee Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance and order and rhythm and harmony.
