Gulmarg, other heights receive snowfall, chill continues in Kashmir SRINAGAR, December 22 : The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and other heights in the Kashmir valley received light to moderate snowfall, ending the long-dry spell while dry and chilly weather conditions continued in plains, including summer capital, Srinagar. The Meteorological department said here this afternoon that there could be light rain or snow at scattered places over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. Night temperature which witnessed some improvement during the past two days will drop again as the weather will remain mainly dry during subsequent four days, he said. People woke up to yet another bone chilling morning with poor visibility in the valley, including the summer capital, Srinagar. Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, finally received light snowfall, thus ending a long dry spell in the world famous ski resort. The ski slopes are yet to turn white as snow started only today, a hotel owner told UNI over phone. However, tree tops and green meadows had turned white in the upper reaches, including Kongdori, Khilanmarg and Affarwat, the highest skiing point connected by Cable Car. ‘We are still awaiting the first major snowfall which could bring tourists, skiers and other adventure lovers to this ski resort,’ he said. The upper reaches in north Kashmir, including areas near the Line of Control (LoC), also received fresh snowfall. At Pahalgam, where the coldest so far was recorded minus 7.2 degrees on December 19, the minimum temperature was minus 3.6 degrees, more than a notch above normal. However, the holy Amarnath cave shrine and its periphery, Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Pisso top and Panjterni received light to moderate snowfall during the past two days. Because of cloudy weather during the night, the minimum temperature remained minus 2.8 degrees, more than two notches above normal. (AGENCIES)
