HEALTHY TIP OF THE DAY: One step at a time might not be the best get-healthy approach. For more success, change eating and activity patterns simultaneously. You know you need to eat better and you really want to get started on a sustainable exercise program. But how do you get started? You might think taking on one get-healthy change at a time would lead to better results. But a new study in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine found just the opposite. Research shows that tackling both areas at once is better than trying to implement one at a time. Over the course of a year, those who made simultaneous changes to their eating and activity patterns were the most likely to meet U.S. guidelines for nutrition and fitness, compared to those who tackled fitness and then diet, or vice versa. The researchers believe this may be because each subsequent change requires another bout of motivation, which may, by then, be in short supply. By focusing attention on both health behaviors from the start, you are more likely to make both a priority.
