HEATSTROKE - mad dogs and English men go out in the midday sun! So most of us are enjoying the hot sunny days and outdoor activities, but please be mindful of your dogs. This weather is too hot for many dogs to cope with, and the elderly or poorly dogs will suffer even more, short nose breeds and obese dogs will also be at a higher risk. Dogs arent very efficient at cooling themselves down and only have sweat glands in their nose and feet, this means they have to rely on panting. Restrict outside exercise and have regular breaks, take walks either early in the morning or in the evening when the temperature drops. Have plenty of fresh cold water available and always take some with you when you go out. Keep car journeys as short as possible, and always have a window open to blow in fresh air - DO NOT leave your dog in the car unattended. For fun why not buy them their own paddling pool! Signs of heatstroke: Faster, heavier panting. Whining and agitation. Excessive thirst and drooling. Increased pulse and heart rate. A darker colour to their tongue and gums. High body temperature. Staggering, weakness or collapse. Seizures. Unconsciousness.
