HELPAGE INTERNATIONAL IN HAITI Following cyclone Sandy, in November 2012 HelpAge International in Haiti received funding from DfID to rehabilitate/ build 100 cyclone- and quake-resistant houses for older person headed households in the District of Fonds Jean Noel, Marigot Commune. Following a survey in March 2013 which identified a lack of access to piped drinking water or a rainwater capping/storing system, HelpAge installed 100 rainwater-collecting systems on the recently built/repaired houses, improving accessibility and reducing water-fetching time by 75%. However, the families still had difficulties in treating contaminated water (available options were expensive, difficult to implement and had a negative environmental impact). Therefore, with funding from DfID in July 2014 HelpAge provided these households, and 500 others, with Grifaid®Family Aquafilters. Varying levels of training was provided upon distribution and post-distribution monitoring was carried out to identify the user friendliness of the Grifaid®Family Aquafilters and any benefits realised by people from having a safe water supply. Overall, the Grifaid®Family Aquafilters were very well received and HelpAge found that they could be used with minimal training, as long as community agents receive training so they can provide ongoing support.
