HERE IS OUR SPECIES LIST AND PRESS RELEASE! 6TH ANNUAL NATIVE PLANT SALE, JUNE 6,7,8 and JUNE 13,14,15, 2014 Suffolk County Community College Eastern Campus Greenhouse PLANTS, GRASSES, AND SHRUBS RIVERHEAD, NY, May 27, 2014 – More and more homeowners are “going green” by integrating native plants into their local landscapes to attract native pollinators, protect water quality and buffer against hurricane damage. This intentional action provides a more peaceful mindset by increasing a healthy and resilient environment with little economic investments. The 6th Annual Long Island Native Plant Initiative (LINPI) plant sale is the perfect place to get inspired to plant by picking from an array of native wildflowers like Butterfly Milkweed, New England Aster, LI’s only native cactus, the Eastern Prickly Pear or native grasses such as Little Bluestem and Switchgrass. LINPI’s plants are truly native being propagated from seed harvested locally from LI’s natural areas making them the most environmentally and ecologically adapted plants to Long Island’s conditions. The benefit to the homeowner is they require little to no soil amendments, irrigation, fertilizer applications, or pesticide usage while adding beauty and diverse array of pollinator and wildlife habitat, with little worry or cares. Polly Weigand, founder and executive director of the Long Island Native Plant Initiative shares “LINPI’s founding mission is to ensure the commercial availability of genetically native plant materials and support Long Island’s nursery and landscaping industry. Our annual plant sale and benefit serves as a progressive opportunity for local nurseries and garden centers to diversify their native plant offerings and for homeowners to support the efforts of LINPI by purchasing native plants.” This year’s sale takes place on June 6-8 and June 13-15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the greenhouse at Suffolk Community College’s Riverhead Campus. Garden lovers will find plants in various stages of growth and meet the powerhouses of the local native plant movement that have made this event an annual rite for anyone that cares about the environment. For those cultivating an ornamental landscape, a restoration project, or stabilizing a steep slope, the sale will offer a wide selection with over 30 attractive Long and Staten Island genetically native flowering plants and grasses available for purchase at the plant sale or by appointment during other times of the year. Shoppers can also pick up gardening tips and expert advice, on topics ranging from invasive species identification to plant handling, from the volunteers and staff members who will be on hand at the sale. Special wholesale pricing and orders are extended to commercial nursery industry. Weigand adds, “We first started to propagate native grasses to protect the genetic integrity and heritage of Long Island’s native plant populations. In our ninth year we continue to foster a demand for native wildflowers and shrubs and support the nursery industry to ensure a regular commercial supply of genetically local native plants and seeds. The plant sale is a fundraiser for LINPI’s volunteer cooperative effort of over thirty non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, nursery professionals, and citizens. All proceeds will benefit LINPI’s program to help preserve Long Island’s biodiversity by providing truly native plant materials to the nursery and landscaping industry and general public.
