WISH THESE YOUNG MEN THE BEST AS THEY COMPETE TO RECEIVE AN INVITE TO THE ALL AMERICAN GAME IN JUNE AT WRIGLEY FIELD. Antonio Torres Continues Upward Trend in Sacramento, CA Antonio Torres Antonio Torres (photo from April 2012) We first saw Antonio Torres, a left-handed hitting catcher from Creek View Ranch Middle School in Northern California, in October 2010 at the Under Armour National Tryout in Santa Rosa, CA. He posted a 2.38 pop time and a raw velocity of 66 mph that day, both respectable numbers for an 8th-grader. In January of 2011 he attended the Arizona National Spring Training, where he worked on all aspects of his game – and set the wheels in motion for his development. In the Spring of 2012 – at the Under Armour National Tryout and Premium Video Program in Stockton, CA – he was ready to put his skills to the test once again. Now standing at 5-foot-9 and 150 pounds, he was poised to post improved results. And he did exactly that – his pop time had fallen nearly four tenths of a second from 2.38 to 2.00, while his raw velocity jumped up over ten mph from 66 to 77 mph. In about a year-and-a-half, Torres had made truly incredible strides…but he wasn’t finished. On Sunday, December 7 the Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout tour rolled through Sacramento, CA. On the campus of Sacramento City College, our events took place at Union Stadium. A familiar face was in attendance, only his body had changed. Now 6-foot-1, nearly 180 pounds, and a senior at Antelope HS, Antonio Torres was back…and ready to offer proof of his continued upward trend. This time out, Torres posted a pop time of 1.97 and raw velocity of 84 mph. Not only was his 1.97 an improvement over his previous best of 2.00, but it was also the lowest time of the day in Sacramento. His 84 mph raw velocity was only one tick off the highest of the day. With readings of 85 mph, 2016 SS Sean Erickson (Del Campo HS – Antelope, CA) and 2017 OF Nathan Thimjon (Franklin HS – Elk Grove, CA) lead the way in that category. The best runner of the day was Sean Erickson at 7.16 in the 60 yard dash, and the top fastball belonged to 2016 RHP/3B Landon Mitchell (Vista Del Lago HS – Folsom, CA) at 84 mph.
