HH Copperbelt Roundup Lusaka, Zambia - Tuesday 11th June, 2013 UPND president Hakainde Hichilema was on the Copperbelt on the 8th and 9th June of 2013. The president was scheduled to visit Kitwe, Ndola and Luanshya. He chose to visit these towns because they represent the majority of the Copperbelt population. The president also recognises the economic significance held by these three towns. In Kitwe, HH started his tour by featuring on a programme on radio Ichengelo. With him on the programme was the chairperson of labour in UPND, Percy Chanda. It was a live phone in programme and HH tackled several issues ranging from human to income poverty. He also spoke about subsidies and repeated calls for the govt to bring back subsidies as he condemned their removal and impact it would have on the poor Most callers registered their displeasure with the current government. Some acknowledged that it was a mistake they made voting for the current govt. Others also apologised for having fallen for the fake promises made by the PF. HH assured the people on the copperbelt of his unwavering commitment to the cause of economic liberation. He explained that he would not make promises he was not ready to fulfill. HH later proceeded to Chisokone market in the centre of town. He visited stands and shops and had a good chat with the owners. HH was mobbed by hoards of people as he toured the market that cameramen and security had a difficult time to extricate themselves from the people. The youths wanted HH to address them and he did not disappoint. He had a brief meeting with them and reminded them that next time they are given an opportunity to vote, they must listen carefully to what each of the politicians will say to them. He warned them that whoever would come to them with another promise of delivering development in 90 days must be told that he is LYING. At Flava fm radio. HH in his interview covered many issues and repeatedly illustrated how the removal of subsidies by the Pf will contract this economy. "We have to watch out before Zambia reaches stagnation." After Kitwe HH proceeded to Ndola in time for the Zambia vs Lesotho match at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium. He joined hundreds of cheering supporters and sat with them in the open wings. He received a thunderous round of applause as those seated around him recognised him. After Zambia demolished Lesotho 4 goals to nil, HH had difficulties leaving the stadium as supporters mobbed him as he took pleasure in taking photos with them. As he left some of the supporters offered to run along his car as part of the security detail.
