HH Sheikh Mohammed dedicates Dubais Expo 2020 win to President, UAE people Thursday, November 28, 20137DAYS Follow Dubai won the right to host Expo 2020 on Wednesday, becoming the first city in the Middle East and North Africa region to stage the prestigious event in its more than 150-year history. The emirate beat Ekaterinburg in Russia at the finish line by 116 votes to 47 in the third round of voting at the 168-nation Bureau International des Exhibitions (BIE) General Assembly in Paris. The landslide victory came after bids from Sao Paulo in Brazil and Izmir in Turkey were eliminated in the first and second rounds. The UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum dedicated Dubai’s achievement to the UAE President, members of the Supreme Council and Rulers of the Emirates, and to the people of the UAE. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has dedicated Dubais win as host city of the World Expo 2020 to UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Sheikh Mohammed thanked HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and all the nations, establishments and individuals within and outside the UAE for their support in line with the bid’s campaign slogan ‘Be a part of it’. He said: “It is by the unwavering efforts of the leadership and the people of the UAE that this aspiration became reality.” He said that the Dubai Expo 2020 would stand out as the best edition in the history of the event in terms of preparation and presentation. He said: “We renew our promise to astonish the world in 2020. Dubai will bring to life our vision: ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’. “Our goal is to build a better future for the region’s youth. The UAE will achieve it through collaboration and inspiration at the event. Dubai Expo 2020 will breathe new life into the ancient role of the Middle East as a melting pot for cultures and creativity.” The Vice-President called the competition “challenging” as he expressed best wishes for Sao Paulo, Ekaterinburg and Izmir. He said: “The competitors were strong. We wish them all the success in all their future initiatives.” He added: “It is by the unwavering efforts of the leadership and the people of the UAE that this aspiration became reality.” Sheikh Mohammed also took to Twitter to express his thanks, tweeting: “To all people in the UAE: your support and enthusiasm fuelled our victory at Dubai Expo 2020. Today, you are all champions.” Meanwhile, Dubai Crown Prince His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said: We congratulate our wise leadership and the people of our beloved country on this achievement. Winning the bid is proof of UAEs leading status globally in competing on events of this magnitude. We draw success from the spirit of the union that dwells deep within our people.
