Had an interesting convo with my trainer today. Out of the blue, he asked me what Pi is. I started by telling him that it is an irrational number, in fact a transcendental number. You can imagine the reaction I got from him( exactly, what the hell is that? ). Knowing he is a history buff, I told him that ancient Greeks like Archimedes of Syracuse discovered that given a circle, no matter how big or small, the ratio between the circumference and the diameter is always a constant. more importantly, if the circumference is an integer then the diameter is not and vice versa. He asked me if there are still people who do math for a living. I told him the Cinderella story of Yitang Zhang en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yitang_Zhang I am glad I was able to spread some love for mathematics and the life lesson that one has to live for what (s)he loves to do in spite of obstacles in life. It is the pursuit of happiness, not money that is the most respectable virtue.
