Happened to hear an Arabic song called Aïcha today. Instantly loved it! Later, came to know it was sung by Khaled, the same Algerian raï singer, who sang the iconic Didi (I remember listening to Didi a lot while traveling in the school bus years ago). And that Aïcha was released in 1996! (Wondering how I missed this song all this while!). Anyways, Khaled is 54 now and has already composed and performed a whole lot of songs.. I have made it a point to go through his work and come across other raï gems like Didi and Aïcha. (Do let me know if you know some). Heres the A Cappella Cover version of Aïcha by the amazing Alaa Wardi. There is also a hip hop English version by the band Outlandish. But none matches the richness of the original!
