Happy Holidays! In an unrelated side note, I thought it worth - TopicsExpress

Happy Holidays! In an unrelated side note, I thought it worth mentioning that I think the Pantone color of 2015, Marsala, needs a new look! Who said this was OK? Do any of you like it? I mean, in its most robust deepest shade, there is something very Game of Thrones about it and so thats cool–a powerful red with brown undertones. But otherwise, other than wearing it in a fancy evening gown as you control your baby dragons, can you see yourself doing anything with this color? Sewing? Designing? Cmon! No. Frankly, Marsala is but a rebranded oxblood. And you know I love color and I believe all colors are inherently beautiful simply because they exist. In Marsalas dustiest form (like in the swatch below) Marsala has a lovely desert quietness that you could find in any faded rug on the ol Pueblo. It is sun-baked and earthy. And I do like that for fabric so much more than its darker form. But, in all of its shades, it is rather airless. Kinda suffocating–like a pot of cream rouge or lipstick–it feels dense and moist. Light doesnt bounce around a lot in Marsala (although more so in the darkest, brightest shades as in the dresses below). And it does go a bit bruisey. BUT not all colors in design need to shout cheerful messages from the back of the beyond. Certainly, Marsala doesnt. In its favor, we do need colors like Marsala that are a non-thing. Colors that offer quiet, neutral gaps in a a design. Colors that dont shout, but rather recede. In this area, Marsala is winning! I just dont think it has star power. A color like this new spin on terra-cotta doesnt have what it takes to stand up to the Papparazzi. I do think the Pantone color of the year sets an emotional, cultural tone. It brings a spirit. I suppose my fundamental problem with Marsala is that it offers a dull, blah 2015. I suppose Ill have to work on this...maybe in my therapists office (ha!) and maybe we need a break from Radiant Orchid and all the shouting. But, damn, I do love a good party. And Radiant Orchid was a total party. I am not (and never have been) a fan of irony. I dont like making something cool because it is so uncool...or finding fashion in the ugly. I am old fashioned, optimistic and earnest. I like pretty things because they are pretty. No matter how many times you tell me to paint my nails mint, I just wont. I am mainly on the side of classic beauty. And that doesnt mean I am without a sense of humor, I just dont go in for the cool choice, usually. So as a public service announcement Id like to offer another color as the color of 2015: inky! Inky is my name for an indigo that almost has hints of teal (or even purplish undertones), but doesnt quite go there. It isnt quite the color of ink, because that would be too dark. Instead it is deep and lovely...wild as the night sky before dawn or just after sunset...full of the last particles of reflected light from the setting sun. Inky is a reflective, quiet color. Inky plays well with its friends and is friend to many. Inky is the guest at your dinner table who is just quiet enough that she lets the others shine their brightest by asking the right questions and being open hearted and wise. So heres to a contemplative, rich an harmonious 2015! Move over Marsala! Read more about my color pick for 1015 here: areconnecting/indigo-color.html#.VJ5aL7gIMHA
