Happy New Year! Im in for Sean tonight. I hope your New Years Day was great… and you enjoyed the sunshine, because you won’t be seeing much of it after today. Overnight, we’ll see increasing clouds. Temperatures, not as cold as last night, with temps being held up a bit from the increase in the cloud cover. Lows tonight only dip to around 30 degrees. Not also out of the question that we could see a brief sprinkle/light shower in the border counties with West Virginia; however, we expect this to be the exception rather than the rule. Friday, brings a pretty thick cloud deck over the area. Temperatures will hold around 50 degrees area wide. Again, not out of the realm of possibility to have a shower in the mountainous communities but once again they will be very few and far between. Looking ahead, A large storm system and trailing cold front is making its way across the county. Currently the system is spinning around the ArkLaTex and moving east. We expect that to reach the Heart of Virginia by Saturday Morning. Should the moisture from the system get to the Heart of Virginia overnight Friday, it could briefly start out as a period of snow/sleet/freezing rain. This would be most prevalent in the mountainous communities, and no major accumulation is expected. If this happens, it will not last long as temperatures will climb into the mid 40s which will change everything over to all rain by mid morning. Sunday, temperatures reach the mid 50s once the wedge erodes. With the passage of the cold front, we could see heavy rain accompanying the boundary on Sunday. Clearing by Monday and cooler.
