Happy birthday, James Andrew Jimmy Rushing 26 August 1901 - 8 June 1972. Mr. Five By Five, as he was also known as, was born in Oklahoma City and started his illustrious career with Jelly Roll Morton in 1924. He then went with Walter Pages Blue Devils in 1927. He sang with many popular bands of his time; , Benny Moten and of course Count Basie from 1935 to 1948. There was a song popularized by Harry James in 1942 called Mr. Five by Five alluding to his rotund build. He was featured in the movie, The Learning Tree directed by Gordon Parks in 1969.
