Happy new year to our wonderful supporters! Wishing you all a fantastic 2015 and hoping you made the most of your NYE! I spent my NYE in beautiful Burleigh Heads, QLD where I took a kayak down the Tallebudgera estuary to David Fleays fauna reserve. Fleay was the first known naturalist to study and document the Powerful Owl and his book Nightwatchmen of Bush and Plain is a historic and intriguing read on the subject (I recommend it highly)! Fleay can claim the first known captive breeding of the powerful owl (1968), sooty owl (1969), grey goshawk (1971), mainland masked owl (1971), grass owl (1972), Pacific baza (1975) and the wedge-tailed eagle (1977). In 1988 Fleay also successfully bred the yellow-bellied glider (Petaurus australis) after 60 years of attempting to do so—the first bred in captivity. If youre ever in the area, check out the David Fleay Wildlife Park in West Burleigh Heads, QLD. Its a little gem in a beautiful location. Happy 2015!!! -Kristen.
