Hardening off and Early Cover After doing such a good job - TopicsExpress

Hardening off and Early Cover After doing such a good job selecting your seeds, planting them indoors and helping them become strong plants, there is one more step before they can be successfully transplanted to the garden – “hardening off”. Depending upon when you decide to transplant, you may need to add protection against cool nights. This can be done in many ways from low cost homemade methods to fancier and usually more expensive methods found in catalogs and stores. We prefer to recycle and use the homemade approach. Once the plants are in the ground and watered they will benefit from cover. This protects tender plants from spring winds and it will help keep the plants warm at night. Protection can be a plastic milk carton with the ends cut off, plastic pickle jugs from a local fast food restaurant, light frost covers or old light weight blankets, large plastic bottles (as long as they did not contain chemicals). Protective materials should be translucent to allow the young plants plenty of sun and warmth. Be creative with what you have access to and recycle the plastic where you can.
