Harvest moons arrival earlier than usual this year Burlington Post By Mario Carr - Special to Burlington Post This year’s Sept. 8 harvest moon will be earlier than normal. It’s the first full moon close to the autumn equinox, which marks the arrival of autumn Sept. 22 at 10:29 p.m. That’s when the centre of the sun’s disk crosses Earth’s equator and marches southward every day for the winter. This year’s harvest moon will look spectacular and provide an outstanding photographic opportunity. It will have a yellowish look due to the Earth’s atmosphere. Many people will be convinced that it looks huge as it rises low in the eastern early-evening sky. Its orbit is also closer to the Earth, making it similar to last month’s supermoon, which was marginally bigger and brighter. If you miss the harvest moon, you can still see it Sept. 7 and Sept. 9. Here are September stargazer events. Most are listed in the Hamilton Amateur Astronomers calendar.
