Have you heard of the pioneer babys grave? George and Helena Brownstein probably had no idea what their son’s grave would become when he died in 1864. The German-Jewish couple just wanted a proper grave site for baby Charles, who only lived to be 7 months old. But finding a Jewish burial ground in gold country wasn’t easy, and it turned out the only site anywhere near their hometown of Red Bluff was in Shasta. Sunday was the 150th anniversary of Charles’ death, and Redding’s Temple Beth Israel held a ceremony at Shasta Elementary School to honor not only Charles, but all the infants of pioneer times who had similarly sad fates.
