Have you heard the term, getting to futility before? That is when your child is faced with the reality that he will not be getting what he is demanding. An important brain-growth process happens here where the defensiveness that is driven from the fight-or-flight part of the mind shifts over to the rational part--its like the child gets to the point where he thinks, Oh no! Im not going to get more ice cream. That sucks, but oh well, carry on. Anger/ rage is shifted to sadness, which comes with acceptance. I talk more about this here in addition to how you can catch a tantrum (for a child at any age) before it turns into a big blow-up. Remember the first two steps of my frustration reduction plan? Its the see it and feel it that can often stop a tantrum in its tracks.
