BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA – Ben Hayward of Edmonton, Alberta raced to a personal best 12th finish in the men’s K1 event at the Final World Cup held in Bratislava, Slovakia. Hayward narrowly missed advancing to the top 10 final but is encouraged with this performance leading up the World Championships: “I was happy to put down a solid and clean run in the pressure of the semifinal. I am excited to race the World Championships in Prague and to reach my goal of placing in the top 10.” Teammate David Ford also reached a season best finishing 22nd position. Alexandra McGee of Ottawa, Ontario racing in the women’s canoe event semifinal paddled to a 15th place position on a technically challenging course set by CanoeKayak Canada Head Coach, Michal Staniszewski. Canada’s men’s canoe entry, Cameron Smedley finished 26th in the semifinal after having placed 13th in the qualification heats. Unfortunately, Smedley was not able to put down a mistake free run in the semifinal and struggled near the bottom of the course on the steep drop known as “Niagara”. “I know I can perform in the heats, now I need to learn to trust my boat speed and focus on paddling a smooth and clean run in the semifinal race.”
