He rests his pen, the monster he created still fresh in his mind. It is an obnoxiously large creature, with the wings of a dragon, the body of a human, and the head of an octopus with several long and scaly tentacles enclosing its mouth. Adding to its frightening appearance, the monster also has gargantuan strength and a malevolence unmatched by even the angriest of gods. And although it is trapped in an underwater city, it is biding its time, waiting for the day when it will be awaken and told to rise. And that day is ... April 2nd, 2014? A baby girl is born and she blinks open her eyes. The monstrous spirit within her is annoyed. I had the body of a legendary being in the making! Why am I this soft doughy creature with no wings?! The baby looks at her surroundings: a sterilized hospital room with two humans in it, one male and one female. She is held by the male while the female sleeps. The baby frowns, and knits her eyebrows, staring back up at the male holding her. Welcome to the world, the strange human man coos at her. Already, the baby-talk is annoying the baby. A few months ago, I held a stupid contest to pick your name. I decided to let the internet name you and here we are! Yes, here we are! Welcome to the world, Cthulhu All-Spark McLaughlin. H.P. Lovecraft fans, rejoice! Stephen McLaughlin, with the permission of his wife, has decided to let the internet name his coming daughter. Of course, there are conditions in that the name will be ultimately chosen by the parents and there are some good people on the internet whove given normal names, like Amelia. But, per the norm for the internet, one of the names riding high is Cthulhu, a monstrous creation from Lovercrafts short stories!
