Hello D4! I hope everyone had a great summer and is ready for the competition season to begin! With our fall meeting coming up in a few weeks, I just wanted to do a recap of the business meeting from AFA last year. • Mileage bonus for district qualifiers: D9 having difficulty coming up with nine schools to attend a tournament, so a new motion was passed that schools traveling over 400 miles would be given a mileage bonus to help the tournament reach the necessary nine schools needed for AFA legs. • All American Criteria: A new motion was passed that now requires All American candidates to clarify whether or not their community service was voluntary or required for credit in their personal statements. • Donations towards the solvency of winning persuasion: a committee was established to iron out the details on how to raise money for the donations towards the winning persuasion’s solvency. There are also motions that have been tabled until NCA. Please take a chance to read these and discuss them with your teammates and fellow competitors before the D4 Fall Meeting on October 19th, 2013 in Mankato, MN. The specific wording of these motions are located in the Notes section. • Motion to create a consistent election process for student representatives from district to district: If passed, students interested in becoming the student district representative would need to submit an application to the district chair before the district tournament. The student’s coach should also be a part of this application process. The purpose of this motion is to increase the quality and range of student representative nominees, as it opens up the possibility for students to be nominated for district student representative even if they are not attending the District Tournament. The complete wording of this proposal is in the Notes section. • AFA-NIET Distinguished Alumni: An award to recognize alumni who have given back the Forensics community. Thanks, Maggie
