Hello! Only four short chapters to go in my story President Fionn, today Fionn is taking one more step towards his future as he comes to terms with what happened to him as a child. Have a good day. CHAPTER SIXTY SIX Fionn went to see Father Hennessey, who now lived in a small bungalow in Dun Laoghaire with his sister. ‘So you’ve left the church too?’ said Fionn as they sat down in the front room, which looked as if it was a shrine to the Virgin Mary, there was so many ornaments and photographs of her. ‘No, no, I couldn’t do that: once a priest, always a priest. Sugar?’ Fionn shook his head. ‘My sister’s getting on and quite frankly Fionn, I couldn’t face spending me last days sitting looking at a load of old priests! Besides, we’re right by the sea, and it’s grand of a morning to take a walk out and look at the boats coming in.’ Fionn accepted a large slice of ginger cake from Father Hennessey’s sister, who came in briefly. ‘I’m thinking of going to America,’ Fionn said. ‘Are you now?’ ‘Yes, only I’m not sure. I was the other day, straight after President Kennedy died, and I was out in Dollymount, but now, the thing is I need your opinion.’ Father Hennessey laughed. ‘Or are you looking for my permission?’ Fionn started. ‘I couldn’t rightly say. To be honest with you, I don’t know if I have the guts to go. I never thanked you for getting Mahey off of me, when he was trying to kill me.’ Father Hennessey closed his eyes and fiercely rubbed his brow as if he wanted to gouge out the memory. ‘You have nothing to thank me for. I let you down, I knew what a beast that man was and yet I did nothing, I was a coward.’ ‘What could you have done?’ ‘Reported him, warned him, attacked him with a stick, not stood back and watched a so-called religious man terrorise and humiliate young boys. That day, that awful day when he beat you and then the shooting, I could hardly believe it had all happened. I wanted to run away and hide and forget the whole thing, and that’s what I did. Devoted myself to prayer, but it was no good, as soon as the praying stopped, the nightmare began all over again.’ Father Hennessey looked distantly out through the window. ‘So he beat us all half to death in a way.’ Fionn said, thoughtfully. ‘Id say the one thing thatd heal all of us involved would be to see you free of him, able to get on with your life. Go to America Fionn, as your grandfather wanted to and wasn’t brave enough, go and live for those of us that are left behind and remember this one thing, Father Mahey was the least free of any of us.’
