Her mother - Eutychia had arranged a marriage for Lucy with a pagan bridegroom, but Lucy urged that the dowry be spent on alms so that she might retain her virginity She had made a secret vow of virginity, but her mother pressed her to marry a young pagan. She didnt want to marry at all, and prayed to God for some way to persuade her mother that she didnt have to marry the rich young man. She consecrated her virginity to God She refused to marry the pagan and she was determined to have her dowry distributed to the poor Her mother, Eutychia, had suffered four years with a bloody flux Lucy had heard the renown of Saint Agatha, the patroness of Catania, When Lucy and her mother attended Holy Mass, one read a gospel that made mention of a woman who was healed of the bloody flux by touching of the hem of the coat of Jesus Christ, which, according to the Legenda Aurea, convinced her mother to pray together at Saint Agathas tomb. They stayed up all night praying together at Saint Agathas tomb, until they fell asleep, exhausted. Saint Agatha appeared in a vision to Saint Lucy and said, Soon you shall be the glory of Syracuse, as I am of Catania. At that instant Lucy’s mother Eutychia was cured. Euthychia suggested that the huge dowry would make a good bequest, but Lucy replied, ...whatever you give away at death for the Lords sake you give because you cannot take it with you. Give now to the true Savior, while you are healthy, whatever you intended to give away at your death. She told her mother about how she had asked God for help so that she wouldnt have to marry. Her mother changed her mind, and told Lucy that she didnt have to marry the rich pagan young man if she didn’t want to. Tradition tells us that Lucy was very happy and like so many of the early martyrs, she had consecrated her virginity to God, and she hoped to devote all her worldly goods to the service of the poor. News that the patrimony and jewels were being distributed came to the ears of Lucys betrothed pagan, who heard from a chattering nurse that Saint Lucy had found a nobler Bridegroom. Lucia’s rejected pagan bridegroom became very angry and denounced Lucy. He exposed her as a Christian to the magistrate Paschasius, who ordered her to burn a sacrifice to the emperors image Lucia replied that she had given all that she had: I offer to Him myself, let Him do with His offering as it pleases Him. Sentenced to be defiled in a brothel, Lucy asserted: ‘’No ones body is polluted so as to endanger the soul if it has not pleased the mind. If you were to lift my hand to your idol and so make me offer against my will, I would still be guiltless in the sight of the true God, who judges according to the will and knows all things. If now, against my will, you cause me to be polluted, a twofold purity will be gloriously imputed to me. You cannot bend my will to your purpose; whatever you do to my body, that cannot happen to me ‘’. Catholic Tradition tells us that when the guards came to take her away they found her so filled with the Holy Spirit that she was stiff and heavy as a mountain they could not move her! Lucy was tied to a team of oxen, but still the team of oxen could not moved her as she continued to defend her faith and complete trust in God Even with a dagger through her throat she prophesied against her persecutor. As final torture, her eyes were gouged out. Saint Lucy was miraculously still able to see without her eyes. In paintings Saint Lucy is frequently shown holding her eyes on a golden plate. Miraculously unable to move her or burn her, the guards stabbed her and killed her Saint Lucy was martyred as a Virgin and died in Syracuse in 304 AD Her relics lay in Syracuse for hundreds of years, were translated to Constantinople Until 1861 relics were later sent to Venice, after its demolition, the relics were translated to the church of San Geremia, where they can still be seen. Her head was sent to King Louis XII of France, and reposes in the cathedral of Bourges. -------------------- The name, Lucia, means Light, And light plays a role in the customs of her Feast Day In Italy, torchlight processions and bonfires mark her feast day And also bowls of a cooked wheat porridge known as cuccia is eaten because, during a famine, the people of Syracuse invoked Saint Lucy, who interceded by sending a ship laden with grain (much as Saint Joseph also did for the people of Sicily). Saint Lucy is one of seven women, excluding the Blessed Virgin Mary, commemorated by name in the Roman Canon of the Holy Mass The other women commemorated by name along with Saint Lucy in the Roman Canon of the Holy Mass are Saint Agatha, Saint Perpetual, Saint Felicitas, Saint Cecilia, Saint Anastasia and Saint Agnes ------------------------------------------- Quote of the Day: From Pope Saint John XXIII -(who was the 261st Bishop of Rome since the Pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) “The Gospel tells us of all that Jesus suffered, of the insults that fell upon him. But, from Bethlehem to Calvary, the brilliance that radiates from His divine purity spread more and more and won over the crowds. So great was the austerity and the enchantment of His conduct.” “So may it be with you, beloved daughters. Blessed be the discretion, the mortifications and the renouncements with which you seek to render this virtue more brilliant.... May your conduct prove to all that chastity is not only a possible virtue but a social virtue, which must be strongly defended through prayer, vigilance and the mortification of the senses” (Pope Saint John XXIII, in his Letter to Religious Women) ------------------------------------------------ Prayer to Saint Lucy Relying on Your goodness, O God, we humbly ask You, through the intercession of Saint Lucy, Virgin and Martyr, to give perfect vision to our eyes, that they may serve for Your greater honor and glory. Saint Lucy, hear our prayers and obtain our petitions, we ask this through Christ our Lord.
